Abstract

Purpose

The adverse interactions between disruptions can increase the supply chain's vulnerability. Accordingly, establishing supply chain resilience to deal with disruptions and employing business continuity planning to preserve risk management achievements is of considerable importance. The aforementioned idea is discussed in this study.

Design/methodology/approach

This study proposes a multi-objective optimization model for employing business continuity management and organizational resilience in a supply chain for responding to multiple interrelated disruptions. The improved augmented e-constraint and the scenario-based robust optimization methods are adopted for multi-objective programming and dealing with uncertainty, respectively. A case study of the automotive battery manufacturing industry is also considered to ensure real-world conformity of the model.

Findings

The results indicate that interactions between disruptions remarkably increase the supply chain's vulnerability. Choosing a higher fortification level for the supply chain and foreign suppliers reduces disruption impacts on resources and improves the supply chain's resilience and business continuity. Facilities dispersion, fortification of facilities, lateral transshipment, order deferral policy, dynamic capacity planning and direct transportation of products to markets are the most efficient resilience strategies in the under-study industry.

Originality/value

Applying resource allocation planning and portfolio selection to adopt preventive and reactive resilience strategies simultaneously to manage multiple interrelated disruptions in a real-world automotive battery manufacturing industry, maintaining the long-term achievements of supply chain resilience using business continuity management and dynamic capacity planning are the main contributions of the presented paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is achieving a leader–follower formation of unmanned aerial vehicles which is a cooperative scenario inspired by formation flying of living organisms such as geese. Designing a control strategy based on only vision measurement (without radio communication) and keeping connectivity in vision are important challenges in the formation flying problem which is the base of formation flying in living organisms.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the mentioned purposes, a feedback linearization technique is used. Moreover, a Takagi-Sugeno-based supervisory control strategy for visibility maintenance combined with an acceleration estimator to compensate the leader maneuvers is proposed.

Findings

The authors conclude that by using practical seeker sensors, all the mentioned objectives (under the proposed strategy) can be satisfied.

Originality/value

Keeping formation and visibility maintenance in the presence of the leader maneuver are the main contributions of the paper.

Abstract

Purpose

To prevent the coil from burning or getting damaged, it is necessary to estimate the duration of its operation as long as its temperature does not exceed the permissible limit. This paper aims to investigate the effect of switching on the thermal behavior of impregnated and nonimpregnated windings. Also, the safe operating time for each winding is determined.

Design/methodology/approach

The power loss of the winding is expressed as a function of the winding specifications. Using homogenization techniques, the equivalent thermal properties for the homogenized winding are calculated and used in a proposed thermal equivalent circuit for winding modeling and analysis. The validity and accuracy of the proposed model are determined by comparing its analysis results and simulation and measurement results.

Findings

The results show that copper windings have better thermal behavior and lower temperature compared to aluminum windings. On the other hand, by impregnating or increasing the packing factor of the winding, the thermal behavior is improved. Also, by choosing the right duty cycle for the winding current source, it is possible to prevent the burning or damage of the winding and increase its lifespan. Comparing the measurement results with the analysis results shows that the proposed equivalent circuit has an error of less than 4% in the calculation of the winding center temperature.

Research limitations/implications

In this paper, the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance of the coil is ignored. Also, rectangular wires were not investigated. Research in these topics are considered as future work.

Originality/value

By calculating the thermal time constant of the winding, its safe operation time can be calculated so that its temperature does not exceed the tolerable value (150 °C). The proposed method analyzes both impregnated and nonimpregnated windings with various schemes. It investigates the effects of switching on their thermal behavior. Additionally, it determines the safe operating time for each type of winding.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is numerical simulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) water–Al2O3 nanofluid mixed convection in a grooved channel with internal heat generation in solid cylinders. Simulations were carried out at Reynolds numbers 50 ≤ Re ≤ 100, Hartmann numbers 0 ≤ Ha ≤ 15, Grashof numbers 5,000 ≤ Gr ≤ 10−4 and volume fraction 0 ≤ φ ≤ 0.04. The effect of Reynolds number and the influence of magnetic field and pressure drop on convective heat transfer coefficient were studied in different volume fractions of nanoparticles at different Reynolds numbers.

Design/methodology/approach

The results show that average Nusselt number increases by increasing Reynolds and Hartman numbers. Also, when Hartman number increases, velocity profile becomes asymmetric. Pressure distribution shows that magnetic field applies Lorentz force at opposite direction of the flow, which causes asymmetric distribution of pressure. As a result, pressure in the upper half of the cylinder is higher than the lower half. Finally, velocity and temperature contours along the channel for different Hartmann numbers, volume fraction 3 per cent, Re = 50 and 100 and Gr = 10,000, are presented.

Findings

The effect of Reynolds number and the influence of magnetic field and pressure drop on convective heat transfer coefficient were studied in different volume fractions of nanoparticles at different Reynolds numbers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the fragmented literature on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), leader–member exchange (LMX), learning, innovative work behavior (IWB) and employee performance across different countries, disciplines and organizations, thereby broadening the literature breath and making gap identification comprehensive. Second, it provides information on how much studies have been concentrated on Africa with the goal of provoking scholarly work in a unique cultural setting on the interrelatedness of these concepts.

Design/methodology/approach

Relevant literature search was undertaken using key search terms, “employee performance,” “OCB,” “LMX,” “IWB,” “individual learning” and “team learning.”

Findings

The findings show positive relationships between the behaviors and employee performance. They also reveal an interesting diversity in the study across multidisciplinary fields holding both cultural and contextual significance for academia and practitioners.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of literature to peer-reviewed journals from the authors’ university library might have missed important information not in this domain. Further studies must make use of additional search terms and engines excluded from this study to provide a more comprehensive analysis.

Practical implications

The paper has important managerial implications for practitioners. The analysis can support the understanding of employee performance from a broader and more diverse view points; and help in providing insight into real-life opportunities, constraints and solutions in enhancing performance management.

Originality/value

This systematic literature review highlights important knowledge gaps which need to be explored especially in the African and Ghanaian contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to the synthesis of Fe3O4@SiO2 nanocomposites and using it as an adsorbent for removal of diazinon from aqueous solutions. Structural characteristics of the synthesized magnetic nanocomposite were described by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of different parameters including pH (2-10), contact time (1-180 min), adsorbent dosage (100-2000 mg L−1) and initial diazinon concentration (0.5–20 mg L−1) on the removal processes were studied. Finally, isotherm and kinetic and of adsorption process of diazinon onto Fe3O4@SiO2 nanocomposites were investigated.

Findings

The maximum removal efficiency of diazinon (96%) was found at 180 min with 1000 mg L−1 adsorbent dosage using 0.5 mg L−1 diazinon concentration at pH = 7. The experimental results revealed that data were best fit with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.971) and the adsorption capacity was 10.90 mg g−1. The adsorption isotherm was accordant to Langmuir isotherm.

Originality/value

In the present study, the magnetic nanocomposites were synthesized and used as an absorbent for the removal of diazinon. The developed method had advantages such as the good ability of Fe3O4@SiO2 nanocomposites to remove diazinon from aqueous solution and the magnetic separation of this absorbent that make it recoverable nanocomposite. The other advantages of these nanocomposites are rapidity, simplicity and relatively low cost.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of the present work is to introduce two new Schiff bases as corrosion inhibitors (CIs) for carbon steel (CS). The anti-corrosion performance of these Schiff bases having N and S heteroatoms in their structures was investigated and compared in 2 M HCl electrolyte. The inhibitory activity of these Schiff bases was also assessed.

Design/methodology/approach

Common electrochemical assays like potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance measurements were used to evaluate the ability of compounds in reduction of the rate of corrosion. Quantum chemical calculations (QCCs) were also used to examine the corrosion inhibitive and the process related to the electrical and structural characteristics of the molecules acting as CIs.

Findings

The electrochemical measurements indicate that both Schiff bases acted as the efficient CIs of CS in 2 M HCl electrolyte. The adsorption of the Schiff base on the surface of the CS caused the corrosion to be inhibited. The change of Gibbs energies indicated that both physical and chemical interactions are involved in the adsorption of NNS and SNS on CS surfaces. The predicted QCCs of the CIs neutral and positively charged versions were well-aligned with those obtained by electrochemical experiments.

Originality/value

Using electrochemical experiments and quantum chemical modelings, two new Schiff bases, N-2-((2-nitrophenyl)thio)phenyl)-1-(pyrrole-2-yl)methanimine (NNS) and N-2-((2-nitrophenyl)thio)phenyl)-1-(thiophen-2-yl)methanimine (SNS), were evaluated as anti-corrosion agents for CS in 2 M HCl electrolyte. The DFT calculations were considered to compute the quantum chemical parameters of the inhibitors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the stability of aeroelastic systems using a novel reduced order aeroelastic model.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed aeroelastic model is a reduced-order model constructed based on the aerodynamic model identification using the generalized aerodynamic force response and the unsteady boundary element method in various excitation frequency values. Due to the low computational cost and acceptable accuracy of the boundary element method, this method is selected to determine the unsteady time response of the aerodynamic model. Regarding the structural model, the elastic mode shapes of the shell are used.

Findings

Three case studies are investigated by the proposed model. In the first place, a typical two-dimensional section is introduced as a means of verification by approximating the Theodorsen function. As the second test case, the flutter speed of Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development 445.6 wing with 45° sweep angle is determined and compared with the experimental test results in the literature. Finally, a complete aircraft is considered to demonstrate the capability of the proposed model in handling complex configurations.

Originality/value

The paper introduces an algorithm to construct an aeroelastic model applicable to any unsteady aerodynamic model including experimental models and modal structural models in the implicit and reduced order form. In other words, the main advantage of the proposed method, further to its simplicity and low computational effort, which can be used as a means of real-time aeroelastic simulation, is its ability to provide aerodynamic and structural models in implicit and reduced order forms.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to design and optimize copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin film solar cells.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel bi-layer CIGS thin film solar cell based on SnS is designed. To improve the performance of the CIGS based thin film solar cell a tin sulfide (SnS) layer is added to the structure, as back surface field and second absorbing layer. Defect recombination centers have a significant effect on the performance of CIGS solar cells by changing recombination rate and charge density. Therefore, performance of the proposed structure is investigated in two stages successively, considering typical and maximum reported trap density for both CIGS and SnS. To achieve valid results, the authors use previously reported experimental parameters in the simulations.

Findings

First by considering the typical reported trap density for both SnS and CIGS, high efficiency of 36%, was obtained. Afterward maximum reported trap densities of 1 × 1019 and 5.6 × 1015 cm−3 were considered for SnS and CIGS, respectively. The efficiency of the optimized cell is 27.17% which is achieved in CIGS and SnS thicknesses of cell are 0.3 and 0.1 µm, respectively. Therefore, even in this case, the obtained efficiency is well greater than previous structures while the absorbing layer thickness is low.

Originality/value

Having results similar to practical CIGS solar cells, the impact of the defects of SnS and CIGS layers was investigated. It was found that affixing SnS between CIGS and Mo layers causes a significant improvement in the efficiency of CIGS thin-film solar cell.
